This course is intended for students who completed the Grade 9 French program. Some of the concepts taught in junior high French are revisited, but the resources used are different. There is also added emphasis on writing skills in order to prepare students for French 30. Students entering this course should be able to speak in sentences and write paragraphs confidently. Recommended Prerequisite: 65% in Grade 9 French, or 50% in French 10
FRENCH 30 (5 CREDITS)
(INTERMEDIATE FRENCH 5/6)
This course is intended for students who have successfully completed French 20. There is an equal emphasis on writing, speaking, and reading and listening comprehension. Because this course qualifies students for entrance to university programs, the expectations on students are fairly rigorous. If students are planning to take any French courses at university, they are strongly advised to continue with French 31 A.
Recommended Prerequisite: 65% in French 20
FRENCH 31A (5 CREDITS)
(ADVANCED FRENCH 7)
Students may register directly in French 31A if they have the following four language skills: reading, writing, speaking, and comprehension of French people and documents. In this course complex tenses and grammatical concepts will be taught. Recommended Prerequisite: 65% in French 30 or Grade 9 French Immersion
FRENCH 31B (5 CREDITS)
(ADVANCED FRENCH 8)
The skills of a 31B student should be strong enough at all levels to use authentic document materials. Readers, magazines, films, radio, music, and texts will form the basis of study and refinement of skills.
Recommended Prerequisite: 50% in 31A, or High School French Immersion, or Francophone background
FRENCH CHALLENGE The challenge process is designed for students who have already mastered the elements of the course and do not need to attend the class. Students from a Francophone or Grade 9 French Immersion background may wish to demonstrate their competency at French 10, 20, and/or 30. The opportunity to challenge will happen twice per year, once per semester. Students will meet the teacher at a meeting in November or May, prepare and submit a portfolio, and then take a four part exam in January or June. The exams will test reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills and will be done just prior to exam week in each semester. Students may challenge one level per semester. A student may not challenge a course in which he/she has been registered during the current semester.
