The International
Baccalaureate Program is a comprehensive, internationally based
program of studies which will appeal to motivated students who
are intent on pursuing university studies. IB study offers challenges
and experiences beyond the regular High School Diploma Program
and the opportunity to prepare for post-secondary study in all
major disciplines: Languages (English plus French or Japanese),
Experimental Sciences (Biology and Chemistry), History and Mathematics.
Visit the IBO website at www.ibo.org
for additional background information about the International
Baccalaureate Organisation and the IB Program.
A successful student in the IB Program will demonstrate a strong
commitment to learning, both in terms of the mastery of subject
content and in the development of the skills and discipline necessary
for success in a competitive world. Students will demonstrate
high standards of participation and achievement in course work,
along with involvement in extra-curricular activities and citizenship
projects. They will benefit from study in the company of other
interested and motivated students; the development of time and
task management skills; local, national and international emphasis
in curricular areas; the challenge of international competition;
and university recognition.
Students considering the IB Program should have a strong academic
standing and be committed to a personal responsibility for a high
level of achievement and participation.
Students initially
enter the program as Grade 10 Honors pre-IB students. They are
encouraged to register for a Full Program to set the foundation
for Grade 11 & 12 choices but may select only the Humanities
or the Math/Science components. Students will satisfy Alberta
Learning requirements in all grade 10 courses and will begin to
work towards the IB course content and within the expectations
for Grade 11 and 12 IB.
Students
are encouraged to consider study in Grades 11 & 12 as Diploma
candidates in a full IB Program, but may also study as Certificate
candidates in a Partial IB Program. Students will satisfy the
requirements for the IB Diploma or subject Certificates, in addition
to completing the requirements for the related Alberta course
work.

completion of all IB requirements. Students are awarded marks
on an Alberta standard throughout Grades 10 – 12 and complete
Alberta Diploma course requirements.
INTERNATIONAL
BACCALAUREATE DIPLOMA requires a minimum of 24 points
and the satisfactory completion of the three additional requirements
of Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge, and participation in Creativity,
Action and Service. The IB Diploma is awarded after May of Grade
12 for completion of IB course requirements and satisfactory performance
on IB examinations in six subjects. Students take three of the
six subjects at the Higher Level (English, History, and Biology),
and three subjects at Standard Level (Chemistry, Mathematics,
and a second language of either French or Japanese).
INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE CERTIFICATES are
awarded to students who do not elect to complete the full Diploma
Program, but complete one or more selected IB courses in combination
with other regular high school courses. These candidates are not
required to complete the IB Diploma requirements of TOK, Extended
Essay, and CAS, but take the IB examinations in the specific IB
courses they have taken.
