Students Riding Different Buses

We often have students requesting to ride with a friend for project work or after school care situations that arise for a variety of reasons. In order to ensure students are safe and accounted for, here are some quick procedures for students wishing to ride a different bus.

  1. One time bus ride – Transportation Services must be notified 3 business days in advance of any students wishing to ride another bus.
  2. Regular rider – if a student wishes to ride an additional bus on a frequent basis, they must request a new bus pass through Transportation Services, providing at least 3 business days notice.

The process is simple and the main goal is to ensure students are safe and accounted for. If you have any questions, please contact District Office.

Transportation of Oversize Items on Yellow School Bus

Oversize items on a school bus can become a safety hazard if the bus has to stop suddenly or is involved in a collision. Students cannot bring oversize items on board the bus unless the item can be stored safely. This means that the item must be in a backpack, closed bag or carrying case and placed on the child’s lap or between their legs on the floor of the bus. Items cannot block aisles or emergency exits.
Considering both the physical dimensions of a school bus seat and the three students per seat capacity, the maximum size limit of an oversize item transported on the bus is 13” x 13” x 23”. In addition, the bus driver is held accountable for a violation of Alberta Regulation 121/2009, not the student in possession of the large item, hence its enforcement.

As per the Province of Alberta’s Traffic Safety Act, Commercial Vehicle Safety, Alberta Regulation 121/2009 is listed below:

Commercial Vehicle Safety Regulation AR 121/2009 – School bus Operation Requirements
Limitation on use of school bus
19(1) Subject to subsection (3), section 52 of the School Act and the Student Transportation Regulation (AR 250/98), a school board shall use only a school bus to transport students to or from a school.
23(2) When a school bus is used for a purpose under section 19, no person shall convey in or on the school bus
(e) anything
ii) that might endanger the lives or safety of persons in the bus.

Therefore, tubas, French horns, guitars, saxophones, trombones, hockey sticks, hockey bags, skateboards, curling brooms, etc., are not be permitted on the bus.
