Phys. Ed & Wellness

The aim of the Phys Ed Wellness program is to provide students with the opportunity to develop physical literacy and to enable individuals to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to lead an active, healthy lifestyle. The program emphasizes active living, with a focus on the physical activity that is valued and integrated into daily life. Participation in physical activity contributes to physical, mental and social well-being, providing benefits to the individual and the community. Through the curriculum, our goal is 100% enjoyable participation.

*Please be aware that CrossFit®, Medical Studies, Personal Fitness, and Sports Medicine have overlapping coursework.

A minimum of three credits in PE 10 and successful completion of CALM 20 are Alberta High School Diploma requirements.

Courses

3 credits

Successful completion of CALM 20 is a requirement for an Alberta Education diploma and for Bellerose graduation.

The aim of Career and Life Management (CALM) is to enable students to make well-informed, considered decisions and choices in all aspects of their lives and to develop behaviours and attitudes that contribute to the well-being and respect of self and others, now and in the future. Units include Personal and Interpersonal Relationships, Financial Management, and Career Planning.

 

Prerequisite: none. Please note that CALM 20 is run as an "unscheduled' course.

5 credits per course

Please be aware that CrossFit, Personal Fitness, Medical Studies and Sports Medicine will have overlapping course work.

Students selecting this course will complete five or more CTS modules from the Recreation Leadership, Human and Social Services, and Health Care Services strands.  Students will learn and execute workouts and fitness testing made up of safe, functional movements with a teacher who is a Certified CrossFit® Trainer.

Students selecting this course will complete five or more CTS modules from the Recreation Leadership, Human and Social Services, and Health Care Services strands. In this course students will focus on broad, general and inclusive fitness. Students will also delve into other wellness topics such as nutrition, anatomy, physiology, flexibility, and mobility.

The goal of the Phys Ed program is to introduce students to many activities in and out of the school in hopes that students find a passion to continue for a lifetime of physical wellness. Phys Ed 10 is designed to move students through a series of healthy lifestyle activities. The emphasis is on daily participation, physical activity, movement and wellness. Phys Ed20 and Phys Ed 30, students will be introduced to lifetime skill activities. Participants will build leadership experience and continue to explore the dimensions of physical education with a continued focus on the topics covered in the previous courses. Students will have the opportunity to participate in field trips that may include but are not limited to; golf, scuba diving, bowling, curling. Phys Ed 30 can be used for entrance into certain post-secondary faculties.

Prerequisite: None for  10, then 50% or higher in previous Physical Education courses.

Course Fee: The cost for Phys Ed 10, 20 and 30 will be dependent on field trips and transportation.

6 Credits (3 Phys Ed, 3 CALM)

The course combines the Physical Education curriculum with CALM 20.  The focus is on a series of wellness and fitness activities, while concurrently fulfilling the CALM 20 requirements.  Students will work towards developing positive skills in interpersonal relationships and leadership. There will be many opportunities for guest speakers and presentations as well as field trips in both Phys Ed and CALM.

Prerequisite: None for CALM or Phys Ed 10, then 50% or higher in previous Physical Education courses.

Course Fee: The cost for Phys Ed + Calm 20 will be dependent on field trips and transportation.

6 credits per course

This course allows students to focus on a combination of PE and Yoga. Take a break from your busy day to stretch, breathe and relax in our yoga studio. Students will practice mindfulness exercises and meditation that can help improve their overall well-being. Different levels are demonstrated for each yoga pose so that students may work at their own pace as we explore Hatha, Yin and Restorative practices.In PE, students will learn strategies which support a healthy and active lifestyle. There will be opportunities for field trips for both Phys Ed  and Yoga.  All Yoga props are provided. Everyone is welcome.

Prerequisite: None for Phys Ed 10, then 50% or higher in previous Phys Ed  + Yoga courses.

Physical Education 10, 20, 30 + High Performance Sport 10, 20, 30

6 Credits (3PE, 3CTS)

This course is designed for competitive, well-rounded student-athletes who are seeking an in-depth experience in the world of sports performance while also maintaining a healthy balance of daily physical activity and wellness. The course is designed to provide flexibility in and around a student's own athletics schedule, while also providing tangible performance benefits a student can utilize. PE-HPS will also seek to provide external resources and guidance for athletes looking beyond high school and youth club sports and are potentially tracking towards a collegiate, junior and/or professional career post-graduation. A major component of this course will be out of school field trip experiences that will include but are not limited to the U of A Climbing Wall, the Glen Sather Sports Medicine Clinic, and sports performance day hosted by U of A and a varsity athletics game at one of Edmonton's major institutions. 

Physical Education 10, 20, 30 + Outdoor Adventure Program 10, 20, 30

5 Credits (3 Phys Ed, 2 CTS - Wilderness)

This program provides students in Grades 10 through 12 with an opportunity to explore well-designed outdoor learning opportunities and a space for foundational learning focusing on physical and mental wellness. The program is geared towards any students who want to be active and experience new and unique sports and outdoor adventure activities. Students will embark on many out of school adventures including but not limited to biking, canoeing, camp skills, golf, hiking, swimming, skiing, snowshoeing, team building, and wall climbing.  As well, there will be an emphasis on outdoor & wilderness adventure skills as the foundation for our activities. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in unique overnight adventure trips throughout Alberta. Due to the nature of the course, some activities will extend into the lunch hour.

Prerequisite: None for Phys Ed 10 or Outdoor Education, then 50% or higher in previous Phys Ed  course and 50% or higher in previous modules completed.

Course Fee: The cost for Phys Ed + Outdoor Adventure Program will be dependent on field trips and transportation.

Hockey Academy

5 Credits

The focus of this course is to develop players both physically and mentally for the game of hockey. During on-ice sessions, student-athletes will work on the fundamentals of the game of hockey while being pushed to advance their skills in specific ways to each individual. On the off-ice days with the Academy, we will focus on mental skills training, game analysis, and listen to guest speakers to prepare for the game at the highest levels. Student-athletes will be on the ice two days per week & one off-ice day per week with their academy cohort. The other two days will be site-based at school. The Hockey Academy program will run during Block 1 in the first semester of the 2024-2025 school year.

Course Fee: $200/month.
